Seals on this drive held up. It is very important not to power up hard drives without proper inspection. If gaskets would have failed and the liquid did get inside of the unit, the results of powering it up would have been catastrophic for data. In this case, we've swapped out the chassis and PCB to with donor ones. PCB had too much corrosion on it, and we did not feel like taking a risk on burning up a preamp. Besides, there is no shortage of Hitachi PCBs in our lab :) The disk was cleaned (from appeared to be smoke contamination) and the original head assembly looked clean and was used again. After the assembly of this hard drive, we moved onto the work with PC3000.
